Speaker: Thomas Li, Ph.D, Director, IBM China Research Lab
Subject: SSME (Service Science, Management and Engineering) ——Propelling the Development of Modern Service Industry

Abstract: The global economy is changing. Service industry will be an important driving force for sustainable economy and a major solution to the serious employment issue. Meanwhile, service industry is transforming caused by globalization, IT development and cross industry integration, etc. Therefore, Modern Service industry is proposed. Although lots of countries advocated the promotion Modern Service industry, there is still lacking large-scale booming of new service practices. Based on many years' research and experiences gained from practices, Dr. Li points out formalized know how generation should be strengthened to accelerate SSME development and build modern service industry. Some examples are illustrated to show this outside in approach. Furthermore, a new view of research, education and practice evolution is proposed, which will be important to the success of SSME.

Biography: Dr. Thomas Li is the Director of IBM China Research Laboratory. He received his PhD degree in Management Information System from the University of Texas, Austin, USA, in 1991. In addition to his 10+ years with IBM, Dr. Li has hands-on experience in managing startup companies, manufacturing facilities, and consulting practices. He is also very active in both research and higher education. He is an Adjunct Professor at top Chinese research universities such as prestigious Peking University, Tsinghua University and Xi'an Jiaotong University, etc. Dr. Li's technical expertise and innovative thinking has generated thirty-nine patents. He has more than 100 publications in IEEE and ACM international conference proceedings, and IBM Technical Journal. He is one of the key contributors in delivering eight software commercial products, three hardware systems, and a number of architectural designs and technical specifications. Recently Dr. Li leads IBM's effort in China to make research on SSME (Services Science, Management and Engineering); he has promoted a new discipline of Services Science by closely working with Academia and is working on helping establish modern services industry in China.
